Waiting too long between retouches can cause banding of your hair color. To do this, keep the boyfriend bob slightly longer and part the hair off-center. Add a few loose waves towards the bottom to give a little movement.

Just a dab of smoothing serum will ensure your hair stays smooth and volumized from morning coffee to evening lights. "I recommend a teasing comb to help provide added volume and hold," Raji says. This works particularly well on a shag, which has layers that mimic natural thickness. If a non-traditional cut—that simultaneously flatters thin tresses—is what you're after, then why not consider an asymmetrical style? While thinner hair types are notoriously known for resisting a curl, getting that voluminous retro-wavy look is possible.

Sliced Lob

This cut lands right at the jawline and draws attention to your collarbones. A tapered weight line on a short bob makes fine hair appear lifted. If you’re a woman with thin hair and desire a modern hairstyle with a middle part, this tousled look is a versatile choice. The haircut adds texture and movement to thin hair, creating the illusion of thicker locks.

Voluminous Curls

Product buildup leads to weight in your hair, which makes everything more droopy. “Using a once-a-week clarifying shampoo will rid your hair of impurities and product buildup without stripping your color,” Colette says. We recommend the Ouai Clean shampoo, $28, which is formulated with keratin to smooth and repair damage. “Any time you wet your hair you should use conditioner,” Townsend says. “But only from mid-length to the ends.” Since you’re opening up your cuticle, your hair needs the nourishment.

The silver shade enlivens your locks with a luminous glow, making each strand stand out against the common challenge of limp hair. While turning heads with its radiant hue, remember that silver can demand dedication to maintain its fresh, polished look. Perfectly suited for those with an oval face, this bob harmonizes with your natural contours.

The Classic Bob

This haircut adds movement and texture to your sleek strands, creating a fuller and thicker hair illusion. Removing excess weight from the sides of your hair strategically will help create body. The haircut’s length is preserved to maintain your hair’s natural bounce. Use a round brush and lift your hair at the roots for extra lift. If you crave more body, consider an amazing, volumizing hairstyle. This type of haircut is designed to create body and movement in your hair, giving it a fuller and more voluminous look.

Curly Pixie Hairstyle for Fine Hair

This hair type is known for being silky soft, but is also prone to falling flat quickly and often lacks elasticity. If you’re a woman with straight hair, consider sleek and gorgeous hair with a middle part. One of the best ways to get smooth and sleek locks is to learn how to do a great blowout. Use a big round brush to smooth the ends and give your locks a nice bounce. Try to preserve your blowout by sleeping with a silk pillowcase and you’ll wake up to smoother hair.

The alternating back-and-forth wave lends dimension and movement. Selena Gomez pins her long-layered shoulder-length 'do to the side for a retro feel (the polka-dots and green shadow also lend a hand). "Any cut with a blunt perimeter will create the illusion of thicker hair than a cut with more texturized or feathered ends," says Friese. Those with fine hair need not avoid bangs for fear that they will make strands appear stringy. In fact, the right kind of bang can make the hair appear thicker than it actually is and look super trendy while at it.

The rest of your hair can be natural, which is actually very gorgeous. A perfect style for the grocery store to an evening out, loose waves can be worn for every day and every event! You may want a round brush to blow dry to start this style for long-lasting volume before you set it with heat. Using a one-inch curling iron is the way to go to to create this look.

To make the rest of your hair appear fuller, try wrapping the ends of your hair around a curling iron. It's also crucial to prop up your ponytail if it's prone to falling flat, so secure your ponytail with two elastic bands in a row. It basically allows one side of your hair to borrow more weight than the other, which in turn creates unmatched texture. For a beachy style like this, you need a salt texturizing spray. Then, style your front pieces with a flat iron and scrunch your ends for an effortless finish. No matter your length, flowy curtain bangs give your thin hair a bit of oomph and fullness that frames your face.

I love the way the color makes the chunky texture of the cut pop. This would be a great choice for any woman with a lot of fine hair and works on any face shape. California blonde with a textured lob haircut is ideal when wanting a new, modern look. Consider warm blonde hues when you have pale skin tones to add color and brightness to your overall look. Ask your stylist for a money piece, especially when you rock a center part, it will take your color to a whole new level.

Keke Palmer's blunt bob gets the retro treatment with the flipped ends and side part clipped back with a jeweled hair clip. To copy her look, blow dry your hair with a round brush and flip the ends up. Use a wide barrel curling iron as needed to give those flipped-up ends a little more staying power. Rosie Hungtington-Whitely's lob plays up thin hair with lots of volume and texture.

The 50 Best Hairstyles for Thin, Fine Hair That Never Fall Flat

The classic pixie has endless variations and generally works on all face shapes—especially heart, oval and round. Try asking for long and/or angled layers for extra shape, a spiky cut à la Pink, or a pixie-bob if you’re on the fence. The hairstyle will give thin hair a lot of body when styled correctly, Dean says. Start with a styling cream and thickening spray, and then use your fingers while blow drying to give the hair shape. Fine hair can be so smooth and silky that your scrunchie falls right through it. But it can also feel super thin, lifeless, and weigh you down.

When dyeing your hair, going lighter and brighter will make you look younger. I recommend talking to your stylist to see what color compliments your skin tone. The side-swept bang works well cut asymmetrically and gives you a funky shape. If you like texture, try an icy blonde pixie with tousled piece-y layers.

Use a small round brush to blow dry your hair or tuck in the ends with a smoothing iron. This curly hair blonde ombre is a perfect way to brighten up your blonde without worrying about a regrowth line. My favorite part about this look is that adding in the highlights gives her natural hair color dimension and depth, and the color will look good, both straight and curly. The shag has the ability to revive limp hair while still giving off a cool-girl vibe. Essentially, the cut can be described as having lots of razored texture, movement, and volume via long layers and bangs, making it ideal for those with thin strands. To fake the fullness, style with layers and an ombré color to add body and dimension.

An extra short tapered pixie will add height at the crown on natural brown hair. Take care of it with a nourishing heat-protection cocktail of Reverie’s Milk. Townsend does this on almost every photo shoot and red carpet. If your hair is on the finer side, you don't want to detract from your overall volume by cutting blunt bangs. Instead, opt for piecey, wispy bangs like actress Rashida Jones. Even when styled straight, model Jourdan Dunn's medium-length cut and ombre color looks anything but flat, giving off the impression of depth and fullness.

#22: Icy Blonde Pixie with Tousled Piece-y Layers

In my professional opinion, a soft blonde works well on all skin tones. A haircut like a lob gives your hair color an elevated approach. Samira Wiley's top heavy hairstyle is the ultimate inspo for curly or coily hair.

Simply pull hair up into a high ponytail and fasten with a band. Wrap your hair around the band into a bun and stick in some bobby pins until it feels secure. There are so many short cuts to try, but we love Keke Palmer's '90s, baby bang look. "Often with thin hair, the shorter the better," says Mohapi. "Short hair allows for thickest part of the hair (the roots) to participate in the final result."

It has more versatility than other haircuts, as it can still be put in a ponytail. The modern shag is a great option for our uber-confident edgy people. Shag cuts are defined by feathered layers on the top and side of the hair and thin fringes toward the ends of the hair shaft.

Edgy Bob

If you thought mermaid waves were only for the long-haired amongst us, think again. Sabrina Quesada's wet-look waves are proof that short-haired sirens do exist. Though Winnie Harlow is something of a hair chameleon, the model's glossy, flippy bob will forever live on in our hearts. Winnie Harlow's epic 'do illustrates just how you can flaunt a pixie, shullet, and lob all in one ultra-cool style. From the bouncy layers to the wispy ends, Billie Eilish's bob has tons of feathered flair. Ever since she sported "The Rachel" back in the '90s, Jennifer Aniston has remained big on face-framing layers.

This precision haircut is perfect for showcasing the beauty of your hair texture. The side-swept bangs help soften the facial features and add visual interest. This is the best style and is easily customized to fit your preferences. Maggie Gyllenhaal's chin-length inverted bob is a versatile cut that can be worn sleek or tousled. "The barely-there layers give it movement while the length is easy to recreate looks at home yourself," says Francis.

Nonetheless, her long layers build upon each other, making the mid-lengths of her hair look majorly dense. The secret to Elle Fanning's bouncy hair seems to be the softly curled ends, which keep any indication of limpness out of the picture. Jennifer Aniston shows how well-placed highlights can give your hair dimension and make it look thicker. Ask your stylist for subtle highlights around your face or a some balayage, which keeps your roots slightly darker. If your roots are lightened up too much, it could actually make your hair look thinner. Rowan Blanchard's sleek blunt cut makes her hair appear full and healthy.

With little to no volumizing products, these shorter layers brushed forward towards your face pack in so much natural volume. Spray in a little tousle spray and shake your hair up for that messy, lived-in style. "Sometimes, bangs are a great way to change hairstyle without having to do too much," says Stanwell. Which is prob why Dakota Johnson's hair always looks fab, even when it's simplistic and down, showcasing her natural straight texture. Plus, "bangs on finer hair can be easier to manage as well," Stanwell adds.

Tatjana Freund is a Beauty Commerce Writer, covering makeup, skincare, and haircare products and trends. Leaning into a messy, un-done waves is a great way to feign the appearance of fuller-looking locks. Leighton Meester completely nailed this fun and stylish half-up, half-down style. Her shoulder-grazing bob lends itself to this look, with face-framing strands left out to bring attention to her eyes and jawline.

Jessica Alba's collar-bone grazing hair looks healthy and full styled straight and tucked in. "There is nothing more elegant than a great medium-length cut to maximize volume, texture, and style," says Bolton. Flipping ends inward is a simple, yet effective, trick in making hair appear to have more body.

Platinum hair is helpful for women with straight, fine hair because it’s easy to maintain. To style, I recommend using a light heat protectant on clean, damp hair. It will help to avoid making the hair feel heavy and greasy. If you have long hair that is fine and straight, you can have thick-looking, fine, straight hair.

Creating thickness and movement to fine hair can be a challenge. A great solution for this is to add layers to your haircut. Your hair will lift and bounce, leaving it looking fuller and more voluminous. Keeping the length is important, as cutting it too short can make fine hair appear even thinner. If you think wispy bangs will thin out your hair texture, just peek at Ciara's look above. It actually adds some dimension to your hair, especially when you wear it sleek and straight.

While there may be many natural hair care products on the market today, a decade ago that was far from the case. Ali Syed, Ph.D., founder and head chemist of As I Am, realized this after he had founded hair care brand Avalon. More than just a return to natural in terms of the hair texture, women were also adopting a healthier, more natural approach to personal care overall. Products containing more organics were demanded, and there remained little tolerance for ingredients and styling processes that would damage or otherwise harm their hair. The vision began to emerge.

Tell her that scissors are very sharp and that she needs to ask you if she wants to use them. It was all so worth it, because it culminated in the birth of a wonderful array of products, aptly brand-named "As I Am". "What, from your product lines, should I use…could I use… to style and care for it?" Dr. Syed had plenty of products that he could have recommended from Avlon, makers of Affirm and KeraCare. Washing and cleaning large production kettles on daily basis, he started asking his supervisors technical chemistry questions.

The line took over a dozen hair care chemists, hair stylists, a barrage of testers, and hundreds of hours to perfectly craft. It launched officially in 2011 with eleven carefully curated products—and the rest, as they say, is history. Sometimes scalp care needs to go a bit beyond just washing your hair, which is precisely why this oil treatment was created.

Kim Sun Young HAIR & Beauty - Los Angeles

It's made with castor, jojoba, and wheat germ oils, as well as cocoa and shea butter for a super creamy texture. I love to use it when I'm on my third or fourth day of my wash-and-go and my curls are looking a little dull and lifeless. It's also great to use before the Curling Jelly if you have really dry hair and need that extra hydration. It's perfect for those in-between days when you don't need a full wash, but you want to wash the sweat out of your scalp without excessive drying. And unlike just using your conditioner as a co-wash (something I've done), this one actually gets your scalp clean. Without hesitation, he and his highly experienced team of R&D chemists enthusiastically began to formulate and provide them samples of products, from cleansers… to moisturizers… to curl definers.

They are joined by Master Stylist Yoshiaki Oyama who has over 20 years of experience working in several counties like Japan, Australia, Canada, and the US. Impression Hair Salon is located in Los Angeles, California and is open seven days per week. They offer a full range of hair care services that includes Japanese straightening, air-waving, anti-aging coloring, and deluxe and premium treatments. They also provide extensions, wedding and special occasion styling, scalp treatments, and luxury massage shampoo treatments. Apart from offering hair care services and treatments, Impression Hair Salon also has its own academy that provides private and group hair cut lessons.

Celebrating one's own natural hair texture was now a lifestyle for many. Even among an increasing number of employees at Avlon, women began to embrace their natural tightly-coiled textures. Fortunately for them, they were able to provide face-to-face feedback to Dr. Syed for products that would moisturize and define their curl patterns. From their clarifying shampoo that helps clear your scalp of product buildup to their styling puddings to help with curl definition, every option has been made with you in mind! The best thing about it is, unlike commercial shampoo brands that are dedicated to eliminating dandruff (but leave your hair dry and feeling like straw), this option is actually pretty hydrating. I've used it to wet my hair before getting in the shower and also to refresh my dry, three- or four-day-old hair. There were roughly 22 graphic design students who graduated with this degree at BYU in the most recent data year. There were approximately 25 graphic design students who graduated with this degree at CCS in the most recent year we have data available. There were approximately 19 graphic design students who graduated with this degree at San Jose State in the most recent year we have data available.

The School of Art, Media, and Technology offers several degree programs for aspiring graphic designers including an AAS in Graphic Design, a BFA in Communication Design, and an MPS in Communication Design. BFA students have three areas of professional study to choose from including Art Direction, Graphic Design, and Interactive Media. Course topics in art direction, brand experience, corporate identity, design research, environmental graphics, human centered design, interactive design, sustainable packaging and typography prepare students for professional practice within a designer/client relationship. For the BFA program, approximately two-thirds of the coursework focuses on “the creation and study of the visual arts,” with the remainder in general studies.

In the classroom, you will learn how to use 21st century design tools for print, motion, and interactive mediums, as well as gaining experience with real clients. Graduates of the Graphic Design Programs at Columbia College work as designers, creative directors, and brand designers at startups, design firms, ad agencies, nonprofits, and major corporations. Examples include Cards Against Humanity, Google, Fjord (part of Accenture Interactive), Leo Burnett, Modern Luxury, One Design Company, and Time Zone One. Over the past five years, graduates of the UTK Graphic Design Program have enjoyed an impressive 90% employment rate. Alumni work at leading companies such as Apple, GAP, Google, HGTV, Instagram, Meta (formerly Facebook), and Zillow. Some have started their own companies including Matchstic Media, Morris Creative, Nathanna Design, Old City Mailroom, Robin Easter Design, and many others.

Multimedia designers work in several different industries, including film, television, advertising, and gaming. According to Payscale, graphic designers earned an average annual salary of $50,530 as of December 2023. Web designers made slightly more, earning an average income of $55,510 per year, as did marketing specialists ($56,100 per year). The digital nature of graphic design makes it especially well suited for online learning. Great online programs equip you with all the relevant industry skills (like design principles, layout, color theory, illustration, and digital imaging) while also strengthening your competence with digital collaboration tools and design software.

News Release The Huntingtons Historic Tea Room Slated to Reopen by Spring 2023

For $62 per person, tea is served with house-made scones (one is flecked with rich butterscotch), as well as a selection of savory finger sandwiches and delicate sweets created by executive chef Jeff Thurston and pastry chef Luis Perez. This garden was started nearly 100 years ago with plants from a range of places, including local nurseries and public parks in addition to private residences. In current times, there are 60 landscaped beds in the Desert Garden that feature more than 2,000 species of desert plants. From beautiful succulents to colorful blooming cacti to agave and aloe, there is plenty to see—and Southern California's coastal climate is the perfect place to keep this dry garden alive. 6, 2025 | This exhibition displays 24 artworks and a performance piece highlighting how Chinese gardens have served as transformative spaces for growing and contemplating plants, encouraging visitors to view their gardens as sources of delight, nourishment, and inspiration. Three striking new works by California-based artist Mineo Mizuno activate the Huntington Art Gallery and its outdoor loggia to invite new ways of looking at the art collections and surrounding gardens.

Airy spaces, fanciful finger foods, and the new Shakespeare Pavilion add to the destination's elegant allure.

SAN MARINO, Calif. — Flowers — flowers everywhere — and even some to drink with a rose-infused tea offered as one of many varieties available in the newly renovated Rose Garden Tea Room at the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. Those sweet occasions were put on hold, first in March 2020, when the Rose Garden Tea Room shuttered in response to the pandemic, and then in early 2021, when a new vision for the space took root.

On reopening day, community calls the revival of Cafe Tropical a ‘triumph’

The Rose Garden Tea Room opened its petals on May 24, 2023, giving flower fans and lovers of traditional tea services a peek at the pretty, light-filled spaces and the airy Shakespeare Pavilion. Plush green chairs with sleek wooden armrests and scattered white-marble-topped tables make for a peaceful scene, noticeably lacking in the hectic sound of traffic and horns that serves as the soundtrack for most of the city’s outdoor dining experiences. The only honking is that of Canadian geese, mixed with the trill of bird calls and patter of the garden fountain. Serving a selection of grilled items, house-made soups, hand-crafted sandwiches, salads, tacos, tostada bowls, and house-made salsas, 1919 Cafe offers indoor and outdoor dining.

Eventually there will be koi in the garden pond by the house, and the water circulating in that pond will be enriched with their poop, she says, and help feed the farmland below. Around the house is decorative edging called rain catchers — narrow drains filled with smooth gray rocks to collect any rain or dew falling off the roof, which also drained to the farming areas below. The final phase of the Huntington’s famed Chinese Garden is scheduled to open Oct. 9, with an additional 11.5 acres, or 15 acres total with new pavilions, landscaping and — someday — even restaurants. Hori already was thinking about a big project for the Japanese Gardens when he first met Yohko Yokoi. The Huntington’s Chinese Garden was in the midst of a huge expansion, and the discussion was how to add to the Japanese Garden to balance the two, says Hori. “This was an ongoing conversation we’d been having [at the Huntington] since 2012, and I’d been taking several trips to Japan to figure out what we should be adding next to that garden,” he says.

The San Marino-based nonprofit, famed for its gardens and art collections, will restore the entrance of the original 1911 building. The journey took nearly eight years of negotiations, bureaucratic wrangling and skilled craftsmanship to dismantle, reassemble and, in some cases, re-create the 3,000-square-foot house and gardens. And starting Saturday, visitors can finally tour the compound, which will be open daily from noon to 4 p.m.

Chamomile Clementine An organic tea blend that delivers both sweet and velvety flavor notes. Originally created for the owners' enjoyment, the Rose Garden is now one of the most beautiful spots on the Huntington Library property. The site features more than 3,000 individual rose plants made up of 1,200 different varieties along winding pathways and atop a hillside vista.

There were plenty of trying times — more than two years of negotiating with city, state and federal officials to get the necessary approvals and occupancy permit to move and rebuild the house. And in the midst of the pandemic, when the disassembled house sat in dozens of packing crates for nearly nine months, Hori had to coax reluctant Japanese craftspeople to come and put it together so the ancient wood pieces didn’t warp in SoCal’s dry summer heat. The Herb Garden was one of The Huntington’s original gardens, “so the garden-building relationship was absolutely central to everything we thought about,” said Stephen Farneth, project architect for the renovation.

The Rose Garden Tea Room was designed by the preeminent architect Myron Hunt—who also designed the Rose Bowl Stadium— to serve as a billiard room and bowling alley for Huntington founder Henry E. Huntington. Hints of the original bowling alley can still be seen in the entranceway to the dining room, as Farneth pointed out. The entrance has also shifted away from the front of the original Tea Room, instead opening to the Rose Arbor walkway on the east of the building, which will provide direct access to the to all three dining areas and allow the Tea Room to function solely as a dining space. SAN MARINO — After a three-year closure, the public will be able to catch the first glimpse of the renovated Rose Garden Tea Room at the historic Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens starting next month. If man caves existed in the early 20th century, then American railroad tycoon Henry Huntington had one of the finest. Built in 1911 on his sprawling San Marino estate, Huntington’s social retreat — just a short walk through the rose arbor from his mansion — was built in a classical revival-style outbuilding containing a billiard and card room and a two-lane bowling alley.

The Huntington returned it in pieces to Japan, where the original builder’s son oversaw its restoration. The building will host demonstrations and classes related to the Japanese tea ceremony. But over a century, shifting soil, termite damage, and general decay left the once-enchanting grounds in less than exemplary condition. Though small updates and repairs had been made sporadically since the garden opened to the public in 1928, structures such as the Japanese House, made in part of reed mats and rice paper, were in need of expert care.

Explore the history of Los Angeles’ Chinatown, the first community in North America to be planned and owned by people of Chinese descent. This site-specific work explores the fragility of the Earth’s ecosystem, as well as the destruction of the forest and its potential for regeneration. The sculpture celebrates the beauty of wood in its natural state and emphasizes its potential as a reusable and renewable resource. The Huntington Library’s extraordinary holdings of 12 million items reveal an infinite number of stories. The works on display give voice to some of the collection’s depth and breadth in the culture and history of North America, the British Isles, continental Europe, the Atlantic world, and the Pacific Rim. Feb. 17–May 20, 2024 | This exhibition of 43 works is dedicated to the work of Sargent Claude Johnson, the California artist whose uplifting portrayals of people of color made him the West Coast’s key connection to the Harlem Renaissance.

The plants are labeled with their names as well as the years they were introduced to the garden. The flowers typically start to bloom in March and are often alive into December, meaning that the colorful garden is the perfect place for a romantic stroll for most of the year. For over a century, the historic Japanese Garden has been one of the most beloved and iconic landscapes at The Huntington, with its distinctive moon bridge, picture-postcard views of koi-filled ponds and the historic Japanese House. One of the most popular spots at The Huntington, the Japanese Garden has attracted millions of visitors and remains a site of both fascination and contemplation. Built in 1911, The Huntington’s Rose Garden Tea Room was originally created as a billiard room and bowling alley for Huntington founder Henry E. Huntington. The building was designed by architect Myron Hunt, who also designed Henry and wife Arabella Huntington’s residence (now the Huntington Art Gallery), the Library building, and the Huntingtons’ garage (now the MaryLou and George Boone Gallery).

This 3,000-square-foot residence built around 1700, served as the center of village life in Marugame, Japan. Visitors will be able to walk through a portion of the house and see how inhabitants lived their daily lives within the thoughtfully designed and meticulously crafted 320-year-old structure. The tea house was much smaller than the shōya house, says Nicole Cavender, director of the Huntington’s botanical gardens, but it gave them the confidence to tackle a much larger structure and create a reconstruction of village life.

On the opposite end of the building, Herb’s Room, facing the Herb Garden, was also renovated and will be made available for private rentals. Eager to snack on small sandwiches and sweets — think smoked salmon with dill cream cheese and caviar as well as buckwheat financiers — and sip beautiful brews at the lovely location? You'll need a ticket to The Huntington as well as a Rose Garden Tea Room reservation.

Billy's Favorite Ships The Story of The SS Norway a k.a. The SS France

ss norway cruise ship

And it was easy to see why; France would be the longest passenger liner ever, at 1,035 feet, and weighed in at an immense 66,348 tonnes. It was clear that this new ship would be the pride of France for many years to come. The authority estimates an increase of 4% in the number of cruise calls over 2023, and an increase of 6% in the number of cruise passenger visits.

Sunward II

ss norway cruise ship

The Leeward was a two level dining room with interconnecting stairs featuring an enormous chandelier, which was transformed from the former Restaurant Versailles which really was a rather simple and cold dining room. She had left the Caribbean on a number of occaisions to make some cruises in European waters, mostly combined with a refit or overhaul at Lloyd Werft, Germany. In 1979, she was sold to Knut Kloster, owner of Norwegian Caribbean Line (NCL) for a sum of 18 million dollars, and she was taken to Bremerhaven, Germany. Almost completely surrounded by water, Ålesund's central area has a spectacular setting. Yet it's full of beauty itself in the form of its architecture, which is totally unique in Norway. The city has a picturesque location, which can best be appreciated by the short ride on the Fløibanen funicular railway.

Norwegian Crown

So, on the way in and out of Flåm, make sure to spend your time out on deck to take it all in. In the conversion of France into a ship used for cruising, many alterations were made to her exterior decks. The ship's exterior remained unchanged during her thirteen years of service. However, Lloyd Werft warned for high maintenance costs if Norway was used in a static role. If you want to see what the Norway was really like, take a look at this great video shot only a week before her days at sea. Thanks to Harold Smiley Davis, the camera and jib operator for this video, and his site, The Television and Motion Picture Network.

SS Norway ( – Norwegian Cruise Line

In order to keep up with increasing competition though, she would undergo a refit in 1990, which included two new decks, providing more luxury cabins and thus an increased passenger capacity. Her fate was ultimately similar to that of the many great ocean liners, but her legacy cannot be understated. She would now be not only the largest cruise liner afloat, but also the first and only transatlantic liner to be converted and used exclusively as a cruise ship. Renovations included increased accommodation spaces, larger and more numerous public spaces, and a reduction from her four-screw propulsion to two-screws as speed became less of a necessity.

Bergen Events: What’s on in Bergen in 2024

Many mainstream and luxury lines offer itineraries to these ports, though the cruises typically last two to three weeks and may include some southern Norway destinations, too. This ship was constructed in 1988 for Royal Cruise Line as Crown Odyssey, though in 1989 NCL purchased the entire cruise line. Crown Odyssey continued to sail with her original name until 1996, when NCL reorganized its various fleets and the ship was renamed Norwegian Crown. She was shuffled around a bit until 2006, when the ship was sold to Fred. Her early years were plagued with difficulty, however, when extensive illness ravaged the ship through infected water supplies in 1973 and a devastating boiler room fire occurred in 1979. In 1991, the ship was sold and became Shangri-La World, sailing out of Singapore and other Asian ports.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is one of the most popular cruise lines in the world, well known for its casual, freestyle experience and stunning ship hull art. Today, the line is home to 16 amazing ships, with seven new ships already ordered and planned for launch over the next few years. Alas, in May 2003, whilst in the port of Miami between two cruises, Norway suffered an explosion in one of her boilers.

From major cities like Oslo and Bergen to small cities and villages with unique museums and great local food, Norway has plenty of beautiful scenery and cultural appeal to make it a great cruise destination. France was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) in 1979, renamed SS Norway and underwent significant modifications to refit her for cruising duties. She was renamed SS Blue Lady and sold to be scrapped in 2005, and scrapping was completed in late 2008. With so many former ships having left Norwegian Cruise Line already, and more ships already under construction to join the fleet, it can be difficult to say which ships may be sold, transferred, or scrapped in years to come. In 2004, ownership of the ship was shifted within the company, and eventually, she was transferred to Star Cruises in 2007.

In 1957, construction of the new ship, known at this point simply as Hull G19, began. Like her predecessors, including Normandie and Ile de France, she would be constructed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique by the River Loire. Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (French Line) had first made big waves in the passenger shipping industry in the 1920s, with SS Ile de France, and later with SS Liberte.

It's capable of hosting three, and sometimes even four, large cruise ships. For example, on 16 July this year, the cruise ships Viking Sky, Star Legend, Jewel of the Seas, and AIDAdiva are all expected in Bergen. Stavanger is the starting point for many trips offered by cruise operators. The nearby Lysefjord may be included on a cruise or offered as a separate boat trip.

Original murals and grandiose wood-panneling have been retained over the years, and these added an unmistakable classic charm to this dining room. SS France would not only sail across the traditional transatlantic route, she also enjoyed many successful cruises, and in 1972 began operating world cruises. However, she was too large to sail through the Suez and Panama Canals, so she instead sailed around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope, visiting Papeete Tahiti, Auckland, Wellington and Sydney, Australia. Evoking design features similar to that of Normandie, including a slender bow which expanded to a bulbous appearance below the waterline, SS France was constructed for the height of luxury and efficiency.

After successful trials in November 1961, she was ready to begin service, and embarked on her maiden voyage to the Canary Islands on 19 January 1962. Her first transatlantic crossing would come on 3 February 1962, sailing from Le Havre to New York. On 11 May 1960, two-and-a-half years after the keel was laid down, G19 was ready for launch. Like the great liners before her, France's launch would be something of a spectacle, as over 100,000 gathered in the crowds to watch the new marvel hit the water for the very first time. President Charles de Gaulle, who attended the launch with his wife, Yvonne, exclaimed "I have given you a new Normandie!".

Nordfjordeid and Eidfjord are two examples of alternative cruise ports in the fjords region that have seen more traffic as other more famous destinations get full up. Also, I've seen Skjolden, Ulvik, and Åndalsnes feature on more itineraries lately. I mentioned earlier that smaller cruise ports have seen an increase in visitor numbers too. That includes the likes of Nordfjordeid, Tromsø, Honningsvåg, Trondheim, and Eidfjord. A ferry trip to the Hjørundfjord is a popular excursion offered by cruise lines.

And if you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, that's on the cruise menu too. Built in 1992 for Majesty Cruise Line, this ship was originally named Royal Majesty until she was purchased by NCL in 1997. She was then lengthened by 110 feet, and offered a range of sailings from Charleston and Baltimore until 2004.
